In his first phone call since the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's regime in December 2024, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani affirmed on Tuesday his country's support for the choices of the Syrian people and its rejection of Israeli incursions into Syrian territory.
According to a statement issued by al-Sudani's office, during his conversation with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, the Iraqi Prime Minister emphasized Iraq's rejection of any foreign interference in Syrian affairs, noting Baghdad's firm position in supporting the unity and territorial integrity of Syria.
During the call, al-Sudani affirmed his country's rejection of repeated Israeli incursions into Syrian territory, emphasizing that Iraq supports Syria's stability and rejects any violations of its sovereignty.
These statements come amid increasing Israeli airstrikes on Syria, which have resulted in the deaths of civilians and the destruction of military facilities.
The Iraqi Prime Minister also expressed the importance of involving all components and groups of the Syrian people in the political process, calling for the adoption of a path that achieves peaceful coexistence and community security, with the goal of building a secure and stable future for Syria and the entire region.
At the end of the call, Al-Sudani congratulated Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa on the formation of the new government, which was announced last Saturday, wishing the Syrian people a new era of stability and development.
This call is the first of its kind between the two sides since the fall of the Assad regime and reflects a new direction in bilateral relations between Baghdad and Damascus, amid growing regional challenges.
