Latakia public security neutralize "head of terrorist cell": Statement

The Syrian Ministry of Interior announced on Tuesday the neutralization of Hassan Ibrahim, described as "the head of a cell affiliated with the remnants of the ousted regime," during a special security operation carried out in the city of Latakia.

The official news agency, SANA, quoted Colonel Mustafa Knefati, director of the security department in the province, as saying, "A patrol from the General Security's special units, after careful monitoring, was able to locate the leader Hassan Ibrahim and a number of his gang members."

Knefati added, "As soon as the security forces approached, the leader engaged them, necessitating a rapid response that resulted in his immediate neutralization, along with a number of his aides."

The security official explained that the cell, led by Ibrahim, was directly responsible for the assassination of two members of the General Security Directorate in an incident that occurred on March 3, and was also involved in attacks against army and security forces.

He pointed out that Ibrahim was leading a group affiliated with remnants of the former regime, which participated in coordinated operations targeting security patrols and checkpoints, as part of a security escalation that took place on the Syrian coast in early March, resulting in deaths and injuries.

Knefati affirmed the security services' determination to continue their efforts to pursue "terrorist" elements, saying, "We will spare no effort in pursuing and striking with an iron fist anyone who dares to target the security of citizens or security forces."

The coastal region witnessed security tensions on March 6, following surprise attacks carried out by armed cells. This prompted security forces to conduct extensive combing operations, which included clashes. These operations culminated in the restoration of control over the targeted areas.
