The Lebanese Army Command arrested three citizens on Thursday on charges of smuggling weapons and ammunition from Syria, as part of its ongoing operations to combat smuggling across the Lebanese-Syrian border.
The Army explained in an official statement that an Intelligence Directorate patrol arrested one of the suspects in the outskirts of the town of Aiha - Marj al-Tut in the Rashaya District, following an exchange of fire that resulted in his injury. He was attempting to smuggle the weapons with others.
According to the statement, a force from the Directorate, supported by an army unit, carried out a raid in the town, resulting in the arrest of additional citizens and the seizure of a quantity of weapons, military equipment, and ammunition.
The Command confirmed that "the seized items were handed over, and an investigation has begun with the detainees under the supervision of the competent judiciary. The investigation continues to arrest the remaining suspects."
