The Syrian community in Iraq mourned the death of Fajr Imad al-Quntar, 21, who passed away on Friday afternoon in the Diyala region, northeast of the capital, Baghdad, just hours before he was scheduled to return to Syria.
The local Suwayda 24 website quoted a source close to the deceased's family as saying that Fajr was preparing to travel to Syria when contact was lost. After investigation, it was revealed that he had been transferred to a hospital in Diyala governorate, Iraq, under mysterious circumstances. His death was later announced, with conflicting accounts suggesting he had died as a result of a criminal incident or a fall from a high place.
According to activists, Fajr, 20, hails from the village of Dama, located in the western countryside of the governorate, and works in a sweets shop in Diyala, Iraq, to support his family.
Hours Before His Return
Sources close to the deceased revealed that Fajr died on Friday afternoon, just hours before his return to Syria. His flight had been postponed by Baghdad International Airport from Thursday to Friday.
The Syrian community in Iraq mourned the death of Mohammed Attia al-Ali, a young man from Deir ez-Zor who died a few days ago after falling from an 11-story building in Baghdad while working to earn a living.
260,000 Syrian Refugees
According to the latest official statistics from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Iraq hosts approximately 260,000 Syrian refugees, the vast majority of whom live in the Kurdistan Region.
This includes approximately 95,000 people living in camps. Since the fall of the Assad regime, a campaign of harassment has been launched against them in their workplaces, under the pretext that their residency permits have expired. This campaign has led to the random arrest of dozens of Syrian refugees in various Iraqi cities, particularly in Baghdad, despite their possession of official Iraqi documents that enable them to reside and work in the country.
