Israel ‘did not abide’ by Gaza truce deal, Qatar’s emir tells Putin in Moscow

Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani said Thursday that Israel had failed to respect January’s ceasefire agreement in Gaza, as he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

“As you know, we reached an agreement months ago, but unfortunately Israel did not abide by this agreement,” said the ruler of Qatar, a key mediator of the deal.

Putin on Thursday told Sheikh Tamim that it was important for Moscow to discuss the Israel-Palestine conflict and the future of Syria during the Qatari ruler’s visit to Moscow.

Russia and Qatar said this week that the leaders would also discuss efforts to find a peace deal to end the war in Ukraine.

Qatar has made a series of attempts to mediate between Russia and Ukraine, and has helped arrange the return of children from both countries who were separated from their parents during the war.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly said he wants to end the “bloodbath,” but has yet to achieve a breakthrough. Moscow has said it is not easy to agree a settlement.

The Kremlin said Putin’s talks with the Qatari emir would also focus on regional issues.

Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Mohammed al-Khulaifi told the TASS state news agency that discussions would touch on Ukraine.
