Lawsuit filed by Maher al-Assad's aide against civill activist

Influential businessman and economic aide to Maher al-Assad, Mohammad Hamsho, filed a lawsuit against activist Abdul Hamid Assaf, accusing him of "defamation and slander in a video clip on social media," in which he exposed corruption and the need for accountability.

The first hearing in the case has been scheduled for May 25, 2025, according to what Zaman al-Wasl has learned.

This judicial move, in the view of many victims, is a counterproductive step, posing a glaring paradox: those accused of war crimes are the ones filing the lawsuits, not the victims!

This move comes at a time of rising popular unrest in Syria, fueled by accumulated frustration over the lack of any real indications of a transitional justice process and the continued policy of impunity, particularly regarding the widespread violations against civilians throughout the years of the revolution.
