Syria shells Homs, three children among 8 dead

(AFP)- At least eight people, among them three children, were killed in Syrian government shelling of the last rebel-held district of Homs city on Wednesday, a monitor said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported the deaths in the Waar neighbourhood, the only part of the central city that remains under opposition control.

It said the shelling also caused injuries.

Once dubbed the "capital of the revolution," the majority of Homs came back under government control in May after two years of relentless bombardment and a suffocating siege.

As a US-led coalition carries out air strikes against the Islamic State jihadist group in north and east Syria, regime forces have continued to battle rebel groups elsewhere in the country.

More than 180,000 people have been killed in Syria since the March 2011 start of an uprising against President Bashar al-Assad's regime.
