Syrian security arrests top Assad general

The Syrian Ministry of Interior announced on Saturday that the Homs Security Directorate had arrested Major General Assaf Issa al-Nissani, a prominent military leader in the ousted regime, implicated in war crimes against civilians.

This came according to an official statement published by the ministry on its Telegram channel, stressing that al-Nissani's arrest is part of the new Syrian authorities' efforts to hold accountable those responsible for violations over the past decade.

The Ministry of Interior statement explained that Assaf al-Nissani held several prominent field military positions, including commanding military operations in Wadi al-Deif in the Idlib countryside, supervising artillery positions at the summit of Jabal al-Arba'in near the city of Ariha, and commanding the military operations room in the Kafr Nabudah area and its surroundings, before assuming command of the Eighth Division and heading the security committee in Hama Governorate.

The ministry stated that al-Nissani was known for his "direct implementation of policies of repression and criminality," adding that he was close to Major General Suheil al-Hassan, one of the most prominent military commanders associated with human rights violations.

The statement confirmed that Assaf al-Nissani will be referred to the competent judiciary to be held accountable for the crimes and violations he committed against Syrian civilians over the years, emphasizing that the trial will be conducted in accordance with the principles of transitional justice adopted by the new Syrian authorities.
