Guterres meets with Syrian FM, affirms support

UN Secretary-General António Guterres met with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan Al-Shibani on Monday, reiterating his full support for lifting sanctions imposed on Syria, according to the state-run news agency (SANA).

The meeting took place at the UN headquarters in New York, where Guterres stressed the need to lift sanctions that directly impact the Syrian people.

This step comes as part of an intensive diplomatic tour conducted by the Syrian minister in the United States, during which he met with a number of senior UN and international officials, as part of a move to strengthen Syria's presence in international forums and discuss issues related to the situation in the country.

Al-Shibani's meetings included UN General Assembly President Philomon Yang, International Atomic Energy Agency Director-General Rafael Grossi, UN Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament Izumi Nakamitsu, as well as the UK's Permanent Representative to the UN, Barbara Woodward, and the Chinese Ambassador, Fu Cong.

On Friday, Al-Shaibani also participated in the Security Council session devoted to discussing developments in the Syrian situation, where he emphasized his country's positions on various regional and international issues.

In a remarkable symbolic move, the Syrian minister raised his country's new flag in front of the United Nations headquarters in New York, indicating "strengthening Syria's role within international organizations," according to the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
