Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stressed that Syria's territorial integrity is indispensable to Turkey, noting that the Syrian government "also acts from the same perspective," and that any infringement on Syria's unity is completely unacceptable.
This came in remarks made by President Erdoğan upon his return from a visit to Italy, where he stressed that Israel's attacks on Syria are an attempt to undermine the positive atmosphere established by the new administration in Damascus, adding that "what Israel is doing in Syria is an unacceptable provocation."
Erdoğan said, "We will not allow the imposition of a fait accompli in our region, nor any initiative that threatens or jeopardizes the lasting stability of Syria and the region. We will respond in various ways to any attempt to drag our neighbor, Syria, into a new quagmire of instability."
He continued, "We prioritize the representation of all groups in Syria and dialogue among them, and Turkey will not allow any initiative that does not take this reality into account." He noted that the Syrian authorities will not accept any armed authority or entity, emphasizing that "we have the same approach regarding ensuring the security of Turkey's borders."
Regarding the US position, Erdogan said, "We welcome Trump's position, which takes Turkey's concerns and sensitivities into account. I believe that we, as leaders, understand each other on the Syrian issue."
He added that Israel is seeking to transfer the fire it ignited in Palestine and Lebanon to Syria, and has already begun shedding blood in that country. He emphasized that Turkey is closely monitoring this development and will act as necessary to protect stability in the region.
