Trump touts ‘productive call’ with Turkey’s Erdogan

US President Donald Trump said Monday that he held a “very good and productive” phone call with Turkey’s President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, about the Russia-Ukraine war, Syria, Gaza, “and more.”

The two had a solid relationship during Trump’s first term at the White House.

Trump consistently highlights Erdogan’s decision to free a detained American pastor, Andrew Brunson, at the request of the president, also during his first term.

Brunson, an evangelical pastor, was accused by Turkey of espionage and terrorism.

Trump said Erdogan invited him to visit Turkey at a later and added that the Turkish president would travel to Washington as well.

“During my four years as President, my relationship with President Erdogan was excellent. We worked together closely on numerous things, including the fact that he helped return Pastor Andrew Brunson, who was imprisoned, back to the United States — Immediately upon my request,” Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform.

He added: “In any event, I look forward to working with President Erdogan on getting the ridiculous, but deadly, War between Russia and Ukraine ended — NOW!”

In a readout of the call, Turkey’s state-run media said Erdogan expressed his support for Trump’s efforts to find a diplomatic solution to Iran’s nuclear program.
