The United States has approved a Qatari-led initiative to finance the salaries of public sector workers in Syria, Reuters reported, citing informed sources.
According to the information, the Qatari funding will exclude the regime's defense and interior ministries, covering other civilian sectors. It is expected that the initiative will receive an official exemption from US sanctions imposed on Syria.
The US Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control is expected to issue an official letter soon confirming that the Qatari initiative does not violate sanctions, paving the way for its implementation without legal obstacles.
The sources indicate that the funding will allow for a gradual increase in public sector salaries of up to 400%, which could represent a tangible shift in the living conditions in regime-controlled areas amid a stifling economic crisis and a near-total collapse in the purchasing power of the population.
