Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa said the decision to lift US sanctions on Syria was "historic" and marked the beginning of a modern renaissance. He thanked Arab leaders, especially Saudi Arabia, for standing by Damascus.
In a speech from the People's Palace in Damascus following his meeting with US President Donald Trump in the presence of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Riyadh, al-Sharaa explained that the decision to lift sanctions was "historic" and "courageous." Addressing the Syrian people, he said, "Syrians, the road ahead is still long. Today, serious work has begun, and with it, the renaissance of modern Syria has begun. Let us build Syria together toward progress, prosperity, knowledge, and work."
He mentioned the Syrian government's efforts to lift sanctions, saying that he had visited the Saudi capital, Riyadh, several months ago and met with Prince Mohammed bin Salman. He added, "He promised me that he would do his best to work to lift sanctions on Syria, and I saw great love in his eyes and in the eyes of his people."
He continued, "Then I visited Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who stood with the Syrian people and endured much for 14 years, hosting millions of Syrians despite the burdens they endured."
He continued by saying that he exchanged visits with Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad, the Emir of Qatar, "who showed patience with the Syrian people in a stance that will go down in history." He noted that he visited Emirati President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, "who quickly opened the doors of the Emirates to his Syrian brothers and expressed his complete willingness to do whatever was necessary for Syria to rise again."
The Syrian president added, "Prince Mohammed bin Salman fulfilled his promise, President Erdoğan fulfilled his love, Emir Tamim fulfilled his loyalty, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed fulfilled his eagerness, and all the other rulers fulfilled their feelings."
Al-Shara added that the US president "responded to all this love," noting that the decision to lift the sanctions was a "historic and courageous" decision.
