Switzerland bans ISIL

The Swiss government has banned the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or ISIL, group and all related organizations, said the Defense Ministry on Wednesday.

The ban, which prohibits ISIL’s activities in the country, including propaganda and financial support of the fighters in Syria and Iraq, will be effective as of Thursday. It is to last an initial six months.

“ISIL has committed serious human rights violations,” the Swiss Defense Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

The ministry said penalties included prison sentences, which could go as high as three years, and fines.

According to the Swiss Federal Prosecutor’s Office, there are around 20 cases of individuals in Switzerland working with ISIL or with similar organizations.
