The Syrian Ministry of Interior announced that the Security Directorate arrested a militia leader in the coastal city of Latakia on charges related to committing war crimes and participating in the manufacture of prohibited weapons.
In an official statement, the ministry said that Asef Rifaat Salem, a leader in the "Homeland Shield" militia, was involved in military operations targeting civilian areas in both Zabadani and Madaya. He was also involved in the manufacture of barrel bombs used during the war, which led to widespread destruction in several Syrian cities and towns.
The statement confirmed that the accused was referred to the competent judiciary for legal action, emphasizing that this step is part of the state's efforts to pursue those involved in war crimes and gross human rights violations.
The ministry added that efforts are ongoing to track down all those involved in such crimes and ensure they are brought to justice.
