Syrian Finance Minister Mohammad Yaser Barnieh discussed with his Qatari counterpart, Ali bin Ahmed Al Kuwari, ways and mechanisms to develop financial and economic cooperation between Syria and Qatar on Tuesday in Doha.
The state-run news agency (SANA) reported that the meeting discussed "mechanisms for developing cooperation between the two countries," without revealing further details regarding the duration of the visit or its agenda.
This visit comes within the context of accelerated Arab diplomatic and economic efforts to enhance investment opportunities in Syria, following the announcement by the United States and the European Union last May of a partial easing of sanctions imposed on Damascus, particularly in the areas of humanitarian aid and development.
These talks are an extension of previous steps taken by Gulf states to support the new Syrian government. Last Saturday, Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan announced from Damascus that joint financial support from Saudi Arabia and Qatar would be provided to Syrian public sector workers for a period of three months, in parallel with the two countries' payment of Syria's arrears to the World Bank, which amounted to approximately $15 million.
