Turkey: Attack on Damascus Church Aims to Harm Syria's Stability

The Turkish Foreign Ministry said on Sunday that the "treacherous" attack on a church in the Syrian capital, Damascus, aimed to hinder efforts to achieve stability and security in Syria. The ministry added in a statement, "We have full confidence that the Syrian administration and people will maintain their unity and solidarity and resolutely continue their fight against the terrorist organization that seeks to sow chaos in the country," stressing that Türkiye will continue its support for Syria.

For his part, the UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attack that targeted St. Elias Church in the Dweila neighborhood of Damascus, which resulted in the deaths and injuries of civilians attending a religious mass.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Special Envoy expressed his deep dismay at this heinous crime, noting that the Syrian Interim Authorities attributed the attack to ISIS.

Pederson called for a comprehensive investigation and for the authorities to take the necessary measures. He also called on everyone to unite in rejecting terrorism, extremism, incitement, and the targeting of any community in Syria.

He offered his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
