OCHA: Gaza residents face catastrophic hunger

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Palestine warned that families in the Gaza Strip are facing catastrophic hunger, denouncing Israel's use of starvation as a "weapon of war" against the Palestinian enclave.

The office said in a post on the X platform: "Families in the Gaza Strip are facing catastrophic hunger."

It added: "Children in the Strip are withering away from hunger, and some are dying before food reaches them."

It highlighted the deadly dangers facing the Strip's residents, saying: "Those seeking food in Gaza are risking their lives, and many are being shot."

It also stressed that "starvation must not be used as a weapon of war."

It emphasized that "unimpeded access to humanitarian aid to Gaza is a legal and moral imperative."

The Government Media Office in Gaza announced on Sunday that the number of Palestinians trying to access food at the "American-Israeli Aid" centers has risen to "995 martyrs, 6,011 wounded, and 45 missing" since May 27.

Today alone, 77 starving people were killed and dozens injured in Israeli attacks targeting various areas of the Gaza Strip, as part of a genocide that has been ongoing for more than 21 months.

On May 27, Tel Aviv and Washington adopted a plan to distribute limited aid outside the supervision of the United Nations and international organizations.

This mechanism has exacerbated the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza, where the Israeli army opens fire on those queuing for aid, forcing them to choose between starvation and being shot.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel has waged a genocidal war in Gaza, including killing, starvation, destruction, and forced displacement, ignoring all international appeals and orders from the International Court of Justice to halt it.

The genocide, with American support, has left approximately 200,000 Palestinians dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 9,000 missing, in addition to hundreds of thousands displaced, and a famine that has claimed the lives of many.
