Over the past few hours, Syrian public opinion has been subjected to a torrent of fabricated news circulated through media outlets and social media pages, as part of a clear disinformation campaign aimed at spreading panic and distorting facts on the ground.
Zaman al-Wasl has monitored three main narratives that have been proven false or distorted:
- Security Threat in Damascus:
The Turkish newspaper Yeni Şafak attributed a report about a "serious security threat" in the capital, Damascus, claiming that the Turkish government had informed its citizens of the need to leave. We did not find the report on its digital platforms at all.
- Turkish Intelligence Agents Flee the Four Seasons Hotel:
Anonymous pages circulated a claim that a group of Turkish intelligence agents fled the Four Seasons Hotel in Damascus after their cover was discovered. This is baseless news and does not correspond to any reliable information from the field or diplomatic sources.
- US Warning to its Citizens in Syria:
A forged version of a statement attributed to the US Embassy in Damascus has been circulating, calling on Americans to leave Syria immediately. The embassy has not issued any such statement, nor has it updated its official platforms with any similar warning.
This campaign comes at a highly sensitive time, marked by escalating political and security tensions, making the spread of rumors a dangerous factor in complicating the situation.
Zaman al-Wasl urges its readers to obtain information from field journalists and media outlets known for their accuracy, and not to be swayed by news from unknown sources.
