Explosion heard in Idlib, several people killed

A massive explosion rocked the northern outskirts of Idlib city, near the town of Maarat Misrin, on Thursday, resulting in a number of casualties and injuries, including civilians, sources told Zaman al-Wasl.

Initial information indicated that the explosion occurred in an ammunition and remnants of war warehouse. The cause was unknown at the time of writing. Shrapnel from the explosion flew long distances, hitting civilians on the road between Idlib and Maarat Misrin, damaging several cars and motorcycles passing through the area.

Syrian Civil Defense teams began operations at the site of the explosion, but no final death toll has been released yet.

This explosion comes amid repeated warnings from international organizations, including Halo Trust and Doctors Without Borders, of the growing danger of remnants of war in Syria, which have claimed the lives of hundreds of civilians in the past few months, half of whom were children.

This is the third explosion of its kind in the area within a month. Two ammunition depots previously exploded intermittently on the Maarat Misrin-Fu'ah road, killing one person and wounding several others, including civilians.
