UNHCR: More than 170,000 displaced from Sweida, situation 'catastrophic'

The UNHCR Representative in Syria, Gonzalo Vargas Llosa, said that approximately 176,000 displaced people have fled Sweida Governorate towards Daraa and rural Damascus in recent days due to the recent military escalation in the region.

The UN official explained, in a post on the X platform, that the humanitarian situation in rural Damascus and Daraa has become "catastrophic" following the recent waves of displacement, noting that thousands of families have been forced to walk long distances in search of safety and are now entirely dependent on humanitarian aid.

The UNHCR confirmed that its teams and local and international partners have distributed emergency aid to more than 3,500 displaced people, and that thousands of relief kits have been dispatched to southern Syria to meet urgent needs.

The UNHCR added that it is also providing psychological support and child protection services in community centers established in affected areas, stressing that ensuring safe access for humanitarian aid to those in need has become essential to saving lives, given the continued deterioration of the situation in southern Syria.
