Al-Sudani affirms Iraq's support for Syria's stability and discusses reviving the Kirkuk-Banias oil pipeline

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani reiterated his country's support for Syria's stability and sovereignty over its territory on Tuesday, and his rejection of any aggression against it. This came during his meeting in Baghdad with Syrian Energy Minister Eng. Mohammed al-Bashir. The two sides reviewed the prospects for bilateral relations and ways to develop them, particularly in the energy sector, to serve the interests of the two brotherly peoples.

For his part, Minister al-Bashir emphasized the depth of Syrian-Iraqi relations and the great opportunities for cooperation, particularly in energy projects and the fiber optic cable from Europe via Syria, in addition to mutual investment.

The two sides discussed the possibility of reviving the Kirkuk-Banias oil pipeline after forming a joint technical committee to study its condition and rehabilitation options, considering it a strategic project that will positively impact the economies of both countries. The meeting also addressed the issue of regulating joint water quotas in the Euphrates River Basin.

Minister Al-Bashir had previously held two separate meetings with the Iraqi Ministers of Oil and Water Resources, during which they discussed cooperation in the energy sector, maintenance and rehabilitation plans for the Kirkuk-Banias pipeline, and coordination regarding the Euphrates water supply.
