Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa sparked a heated debate among social media users after his meeting with Patriarch John X Yazigi, Patriarch of Antioch and All the East of the Greek Orthodox Church.
Activists highlighted the topic of the meeting, with some questioning the message behind it. Others linked the meeting to an upcoming visit by several members of the US Congress to Syria and a meeting with al-Sharaa.
The official Syrian Arab News Agency reported in a report with photos from the meeting: "During the meeting, the national role of the Church was emphasized in consolidating and strengthening the bonds of citizenship and national unity, which contributes to preserving civil peace and establishing its foundations on solid foundations of understanding and brotherhood among the people of the same nation."
Activists circulated photos of Ahmed al-Sharaa and Patriarch John X at the meeting, which took place at the People's Palace in the Syrian capital, Damascus, on Saturday.
