Two Syrian security personnel were killed by gunmen at a checkpoint in the northwestern city of Tartous.
The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) quoted a security source as saying that after an Internal Security patrol became suspicious of a suspicious vehicle parked on the side of the road, the patrol approached to inspect it. One of the individuals inside opened fire directly at the security personnel, killing two.
The source explained that the gunmen in the vehicle fled, stressing that the relevant authorities are working to identify the perpetrators in order to arrest them and bring them to justice.
Since the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's regime, the new Syrian administration has been making intensive efforts to maintain security in the country, including pursuing remnants of the ousted regime who are trying to foment chaos.
