Uranium traces found in Syria, IAEA considers visiting Deir ez-Zor site

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) revealed in a confidential report that samples taken last year from three sites in Syria showed "a significant number of natural uranium particles" at one of them, originating from human chemical processing.

The sites are linked to a building destroyed by Israel in Deir ez-Zor in 2007, which the agency has suspected for years was an undeclared nuclear reactor.

The Syrian government denied any knowledge of the source of the particles, but allowed inspectors to take additional samples last June.

According to the report, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi and President Ahmad Al-Sharaa agreed to cooperate transparently, while exploring the possibility of a new visit to the Deir ez-Zor site.
