Top US military general meets Syria’s al-Sharaa in Damascus

The top US general for the Middle East on Friday met with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Damascus, the US military and Syrian presidency said.

Admiral Brad Cooper met the Syrian president alongside US Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack. Cooper’s wife also met with al-Sharaa and his wife.

During the meeting at the presidential palace, Cooper and Barrack thanked President al-Sharaa for his support to counter ISIS in Syria.

The United States Central Command said Cooper and Barrack thanked al-Sharaa for his support to counter ISIS in Syria.

“Eliminating the ISIS threat in Syria will reduce the risk of an ISIS attack on the US homeland while working towards President Trump’s vision of a prosperous Middle East and a stable Syria at peace with itself and its neighbors,” CENTCOM said in a statement.

The US officials also praised Syria for helping to recover missing US citizens inside the country.

Al-Sharaa was also commended for his commitment to continuing efforts that support Washington’s goals in the Middle East, according to CENTCOM. This includes ongoing talks to integrate the various armed groups in Syria into the central government’s military. “The three leaders committed to meeting in the future to ensure both countries remain focused on countering ISIS in Syria.”

The Syrian presidency said the meeting focused on boosting political and military cooperation to serve mutual interests and strengthen security and stability in Syria and the wider region.
