Lebanon prevents Syrian delegation from visiting Roumieh prison

Lebanese authorities recently prevented a Syrian delegation from visiting Roumieh Prison, even though the visit was scheduled. They also prevented a meeting with the families of detainees in the town of Majdal Anjar, sources revealed to Zaman al-Wasl.

Despite official statements speaking of a "positive atmosphere," the sources confirm clear Lebanese intransigence, including the exclusion of a large number of Syrian detainees from any agreement and the imposition of unacceptable conditions. This is amid the dire detention conditions endured by more than 2,300 Syrian detainees, most of whom are held without trial and face accusations of torture and ill-treatment.

Human rights activists warned that the anticipated judicial agreement between Lebanon and Syria may be "weak" and full of exceptions, which would perpetuate injustice and close the last hope for detainees.
