Trump meets Egypt’s al-Sisi ahead of Gaza peace summit

US President Donald Trump praised Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s on Monday as the two leaders appeared together before an international summit on the Gaza deal.

“He played a very important role. I appreciate it very much,” Trump said of Sisi, whom he called as a powerful leader who keeps crime down in his country.

Meanwhile, al-Sisi told his US counterpart that he was the “only one” who could bring peace to the Middle East.

“I was sure you were the only one, Mr. President, who can end this war... the only one capable of bringing peace to our region,” Sisi said of Trump in a joint appearance as more than two dozen world leaders waited for them to start a Gaza summit.

Trump landed in Egypt aboard Air Force One. The leader arrived in the resort town of Sharm El-Sheikh where over two dozen heads of state, government and international organizations were expecting him, following a lightning visit to Israel.

Egypt’s President held a meeting on the sidelines of the summit with the presidents of France and Turkey, and Qatar’s emir and others to help coordinate the implementation of the Gaza ceasefire and reconstruction efforts for the enclave, according to a statement by the Egyptian president’s office.
