The official spokesperson for the Syrian Ministry of Interior, Noureddine Al-Baba, confirmed that the crime which occurred in the town of Zaidal in Homs governorate is a "purely criminal act" with no sectarian dimensions. He emphasized that initial investigations revealed that the sectarian phrases found at the crime scene were placed with the aim of "misleading and stirring up tension."
This came during the press conference held by Al-Baba on Monday in Homs, attended by the commander of internal security in the governorate, Brigadier General Marhaf Al-Naasan, and a number of city notables.
Statement Details:
Nature of the Crime: Al-Baba described the crime as "painful and condemned by all social components," affirming that the competent authorities are working to pursue the perpetrators and uncover all the details of the incident.
Attempts to Incite Strife: He indicated that attempts to turn the crime into an "entry point for strife" have failed, noting that the speed of security and administrative movement and the significant cooperation from residents and notables were decisive factors in thwarting these attempts and controlling the situation.
Community's Role: Al-Baba praised the "awareness of the people of Homs," which prevented the incident from being exploited to provoke division, stating that the city has once again proven its ability to overcome crises thanks to the "spirit of coexistence" among its people.
Security Measures: Regarding the curfew imposed in some neighborhoods, he clarified that its continuation is "contingent on developments on the ground," affirming that the security checkpoints are temporary measures taken as part of a security control plan.
Return to Normalcy: He pointed out that the pace of life in Homs has gradually begun to return to normal, with markets reopening and shops opening their doors, coinciding with efforts to enhance stability.
