Activists say Al Waer neighborhood in danger as Kobai: campaign

Reporting by Faris Al Rifai; Translation by Yusra Ahmed

(Zaman Al Wasl)- The double standard of the international community in dealing with the Syrian crisis has reached the top in Ain al-Arab “Kobani” town's battle.

The empty town has media coverage and interest in only one month, more than what all Syrian cities got in 4 years. The whole world condemned the violent attacks of Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) on the town, while in the same time, Alwaer in Homs, has been under severe siege with daily bombing, mortar shelling and explosive barrels, has no minor space in media or news’s coverage.

The ugly international double standard, pushed activists to launch a campaign through Facebook and Twitter demanding the same international care regarding what is happening in the embattled neighborhood.

They said in a statement: “for more than a thousand times, the morals and humanity fail because of the international community’s practices, benefit is the only reason behind their emotionless tears they show for Kobani”

The statement added: “we all support protecting civilians, however, the Syrian regime’s destructive bombs and tanks, destroyed a whole city and displace its people, but no one to condemn or even say a single word”

“Save Alwaer” campaign drawn attention to the ugly face of the international community and its explicit double-standard criteria toward Alwaer neighborhood, which is the last stronghold of “rebels” in Homs. The statement confirmed that Alwaer always gave peaceful options to regime, but the later replied in severer attacks and shelling.

The campaign’s statement warned that Alwaer could be at the brink of huge troubles, threatening of possible humanitarian crisis, in which civilians would be the first victims, moreover, its results could reach to pro-regime neighborhoods, which are the main encourager for regime to displace Alwaer’s people.

“Save Alwaer” statement demanded the international organizations and effective parties to be up to their responsibilities toward the neighborhood, and to find a strategy to protect civilians from the mass killing committed by the regime’s forces.

The Facebook has big response to the campaign, where many expressed their anger and disgustingness from the international prevailing silence toward what has been happening in Alwaer.

Mousa al-Omar, commented sarcastically: “Alwaer, the heavily populated neighborhood in Homs, 270 km to the south of Kobani, has been subject to mass killing with severe shelling and bombing by Syrian regime since the first day of Eid”

Abo Mohammed al-Homsi, commented: “Kobani is not more important than Alwaer, and vice versa, the suffering of both Kobani and Alwaer is a crime with many forms”

Another facebook user encouraged Homsi people to keep writing about Homs and Alwaer and their martyrs, instead of just demonstrating hoping to encourage people to read about the truth. On the other hand, another comment contradicted the idea and requested more demonstration and shouting, hoping that could help in drawing attention to Alwaer like Kobani.

Imad Mohmoud blamed the Syrians because of their low contribution to draw attention to the Syrian crisis outside Syria especially in Europe. “Please save the remaining minority of Homsi in Alwaer” ended sarcastically.
