One man died, 265 people received medical treatment during Liberation Day celebrations: Health Ministry

The Ministry of Health confirmed on Tuesday the death of a 17-year-old boy in Damascus due to asphyxiation caused by a chronic heart condition during the popular celebrations held in Umayyad Square to mark the first anniversary of the liberation.

In a statement published on its official channels, the Ministry said that 247 people received medical care in Damascus since the start of the events, while ambulance teams transported 12 cases to Al-Mowasat Hospital and 6 cases to Damascus Hospital.

The Ministry explained that it had raised its field readiness since the early morning hours and reinforced the deployment of its medical and ambulance teams at gathering points, according to a comprehensive response plan based on rapid intervention and the provision of immediate medical services.

It also stressed the continued state of alert in ambulance and emergency departments until the end of all events, expressing its condolences to the family of the deceased boy and urging citizens to call the unified number 110 to request any ambulance service.

On Monday evening, the Damascus Governorate called on citizens to avoid going to Umayyad Square in order to protect their safety, following reports of stampedes and cases of suffocation among the crowds that had gathered in large numbers to celebrate, amid heavy use of fireworks.
