Skyrocketing electricity bills spark outrage in Quneitra

Residents of Quneitra Governorate in southern Syria, specifically in the Al-Rafid area, awoke to an unprecedented shock after receiving electricity bills for the fourth and fifth billing cycles with amounts described by citizens as "astronomical" and "impossible to pay."

The story began about ten days ago when teams from the Quneitra General Electricity Company conducted a field visit to record the readings of electronic meters. When residents went to pay their outstanding balances, they were surprised to find that most bills exceeded 20 million Syrian pounds per household, a figure that is illogically disproportionate to normal household consumption, especially given the extended rationing programs.

A Zaman al-Wasl correspondent in rural Quneitra indicated that the most significant discrepancies were clearly concentrated in the village of Al-Rafid, where the meters registered unjustified and inexplicable increases.

Several residents confirmed to Zaman al-Wasl that these amounts could not possibly reflect actual consumption, but clearly indicate a technical malfunction in the electronic meters or a serious error in the data entry process and the conversion of readings into monetary values.
