Syrian Ministry of Interior takes control of Raqqa’s al-Aqtan prison

The Syrian Ministry of Interior announced Friday that it has taken control of al-Aqtan Prison in Raqqa province, previously held by the SDF organization.

In a statement on its Telegram channel, the ministry said its Directorate of Prisons has assumed management of the facility. It immediately launched a comprehensive review of inmates’ conditions and legal files, with each case examined individually to ensure proper legal procedures are followed.

The ministry also said specialized teams from the Counter-Terrorism Directorate and other authorities have been deployed to secure the prison and maintain internal order.

Reaffirming its commitment to human rights and the rule of law, the ministry said it will continue to oversee all aspects of prison management systematically, to serve the public interest and strengthen security.

In this context, Major General Abdelkader Tahan, Deputy Minister of Interior, toured the prison with senior security officials following the takeover. Tahan reviewed prison conditions, detainee management, and security measures, stressing full compliance with legal regulations and ongoing monitoring in line with humanitarian standards.

The Syrian Arab Army transferred SDF personnel from around al-Aqtan prison to the city of Ain al-Arab in eastern Aleppo province overnight.
