Syrian Interior Ministry arrests militia group in Daraa

Syrian security forces have arrested a criminal group in Daraa province involved in forming an armed militia under the deposed regime, the Interior Ministry said on Saturday.

In a statement posted on Telegram, the ministry said internal security units, in coordination with the Counter-Terrorism Directorate, carried out the operation following intensive monitoring and investigation.

The five detainees—three of them relatives of the criminal general Rustum Al-Ghazali of the deposed regime, confessed to forming the so-called “National Defense” militia, which was used to carry out organized criminal activities under the general’s direction.

All detainees have been referred to the judiciary for legal proceedings. The ministry said the operation is part of broader efforts to hold ousted regime officials accountable for crimes against the Syrian people, in line with principles of transitional justice.
