Damascus, Feb. 1 (SANA) Syria’s Interior Ministry said on Sunday its security forces had arrested members of a terrorist cell involved in previous attacks targeting the Mezzeh area of Damascus and its military airport.
In a statement on its Telegram channel, the ministry said security units in the Damascus countryside, working with the General Intelligence Directorate, conducted a series of operations that led to the arrest of all members of the cell.
The ministry said the arrests followed weeks of surveillance and tracking of rocket launch sites in the Daraya and Kafr Souseh areas of Damascus. Security efforts led to the identification of one member of the cell and later uncovered the identities of other members, it added.
During subsequent raids, security forces seized drones that were prepared for use in attacks, according to the statement.
Initial investigations showed the cell’s members had links to external parties, and that the rockets, launch platforms and drones used in the attacks originated from Lebanon’s Hezbollah militia, the ministry said. The detainees also admitted they had been preparing further attacks using drones, which were thwarted by their arrest.
All seized items were confiscated and the detainees were referred to the counterterrorism authorities for further investigation, the ministry said.
