Syria’s Ministry of Defense said Thursday that Syrian forces have taken control of the al-Tanf military base from U.S. troops and begun deploying along the country’s borders with Iraq and Jordan.
In a statement posted on its Telegram channel, the ministry said the handover followed coordination between Syrian and U.S. officials. Units of the Syrian Arab Army assumed control of the base, secured the facility and its perimeter, and started deploying in the al-Tanf desert region along the tri-border area.
The ministry added that Border Guard forces under the Defense Ministry are expected to assume their duties and expand their deployment in the area in the coming days.
