President al-Sharaa to dismiss brothers Maher, Hazem from official positions: Zaman al-Wasl sources

Informed sources told Zaman al-Wasl that Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa is poised to remove his two brothers, Maher and Hazem al-Sharaa, from their high-ranking positions in the government. This move is described as an attempt to reshuffle the inner circle of power and mitigate criticism of nepotism.

Maher al-Sharaa currently serves as Secretary-General of the Presidency, while Hazem al-Sharaa is Vice President of the Supreme Council for Economic Development.

The sources, who requested anonymity, said they attended serious discussions within the presidential institution, where the president expressed his awareness of the "political burden" resulting from his brothers' appointments to sensitive positions. This concern, they added, is beginning to extend to other state leaders.

The source confirmed that intensive deliberations are underway to establish legal controls that would prevent officials from holding more than one leadership position and prohibit the appointment of first-degree relatives to sovereign and sensitive posts.

This step comes as part of broader efforts to ensure the efficiency of economic and political management amidst increasing internal pressures.
