Syrian judiciary issues arrest warrants in absentia against Assad officials

The Syrian Ministry of Justice announced the commencement of extensive legal proceedings to prosecute figures and henchmen of the former regime, confirming the issuance of arrest warrants in absentia for a number of those implicated in horrific violations against the Syrian people, as part of activating the transitional justice process.

In a statement to SANA news agency on Friday, the Seventh Investigating Judge in Damascus, Tawfiq al-Ali, revealed that the judicial police had completed investigations and inquiries involving hundreds of suspects in committing "crimes and atrocities" during the previous period.

Al-Ali explained the context of the legal procedures undertaken, noting that the preliminary investigations were submitted to the Ministry of Justice and the Public Prosecutor's Office, which in turn initiated the public prosecution.

Accordingly, the case files were referred to the investigating judge, who issued official arrest warrants in absentia aimed at bringing these individuals to justice.
