Dutch authorities on Monday opened the trial of a Syrian man accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity linked to the deposed regime militia.
The man, identified as Rafiq al-Qatrib, 58, is a former member of the so-called National Defense militia, linked to the deposed regime. He is being tried before a court in The Hague over allegations of abuses committed against Syrian civilians.
According to a court statement, al-Qatrib, originally from the city of Salamiyah, was arrested in December 2023 on suspicion of involvement in serious violations in recent years.
The case is part of broader efforts in Europe to prosecute individuals involved in war crimes and human rights abuses against the Syrian people.
