Government reduces bread weigh, maintains price

The Ministry of Internal Trade issued new directives reducing the weight of a bread bundle to 1050 grams and limiting the number of loaves per bundle to ten.

The decision followed a reduction in flour and fuel allocations to bakeries.

The ministry maintained the official price at 40 Syrian pounds (equivalent to 4000 old pounds) to avoid announcing a direct price increase.

Hidden Rationing
The authorities adopted a "deflationary inflation" strategy, meaning reducing the size of the product while maintaining its nominal price. Reducing the weight decreases the consumption of subsidized flour, ensuring that the available quantities are distributed among a larger number of electronic ration cards.

This adjustment means that families who previously relied on one bundle per day will now face a shortage of loaves, forcing them to buy additional bundles or resort to tourist bread.

Behind the Scenes at the Bakeries
Bakery owners confirmed that the reduced allocations made producing bread at the old weights impossible without incurring losses in fuel and labor costs.

The new weights allow for ovens to operate for fewer hours while adhering to the allocated flour quotas.
