Accountability and patriotism: Where is Suwaida headed?

From the very first day after liberation, the Syrian state adopted a discourse based on dialogue and the inclusion of all components of society, stemming from the principle that Syria is a homeland for all its citizens without exception. In this context, meetings and communications with figures from Suwaida, including those close to Hikmat al-Hijri, were part of an effort to defuse tensions and prioritize political solutions over any other option.

Conversely, in the months preceding the July events, media reports and documents emerged detailing contacts and coordination between Hikmat al-Hijri and Israeli entities, which cast a shadow over subsequent developments. Regardless of the political debate, these facts prompted questions about the background to the events and whether the crisis was the result of recent developments or an extension of a process that began long before.

During the July events, Suwaida Governorate witnessed a state of lawlessness accompanied by violations against civilians, amidst mutual accusations between the conflicting parties. The facts indicate that the victims came from various communities, making the protection of civilians and the uncovering of the truth a priority that transcends political or social affiliations.

In the aftermath of the events, the state announced the formation of an independent fact-finding committee to investigate the violations and hold those responsible accountable. This step is seen as an attempt to solidify the principles of accountability and the rule of law, based on the premise that restoring trust can only be achieved through a transparent investigation that identifies responsibilities and ensures that such events are not repeated.

Hikmat al-Hijri's political rhetoric has also witnessed increasing escalation recently, accompanied by accusations of internal disputes and conflicts among armed groups, in addition to positions that his critics consider a departure from the concept of a centralized state and national unity. Reports alleging communication and subservience to Israel have also sparked widespread controversy, as they touch upon one of the most sensitive issues in the Syrian national consciousness.

Conversely, Suwaida remains a governorate with a long history in Syrian national life, its name linked to prominent moments in the resistance against occupation and the defense of the country's independence. Therefore, many emphasize that the governorate cannot be reduced to any single figure or political movement, and that its future remains part of the future of a unified Syria, while preserving its unique character and national role.
