U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres said on Sunday that Syria’s Sednayah military prison stands as a symbol of the brutality of the repression carried out by the country’s deposed regime, adding that Syria now has an opportunity to recover from years of conflict and build a more stable, inclusive and prosperous future.
In a post on X, Guterres said Sednayah prison showed “how horrendous the oppression” had been during the years of the deposed regime, stressing that the current period offers Syria an opportunity to advance its recovery and lay the foundations for lasting stability and development.

Guterres arrived in Syria on Saturday in the first visit by a U.N. secretary-general to the country since 2009.
