Jeddah, Aug. 8 (SANA) Syria’s national team won one silver and two bronze medals at the third International Nuclear Science Olympiad (INSO) 2026, which concluded in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, with students from 19 countries taking part.
Student Karam Halloum won the silver medal, while Bshara Nashed and Alaa Saud each won a bronze medal.
The Syrian Atomic Energy Commission (SAEC) said the students competed in a series of scientific tests alongside 120 participants as part of the five-day event, which began on Aug. 3 at King Abdulaziz University.
The commission’s media office told SANA that the team’s participation followed an intensive training program developed in its specialized laboratories in cooperation with the Distinction and Creativity Agency.
The program covered nuclear physics, radiation protection, peaceful applications of radiation, as well as practical training in nuclear measurements and experiments designed to simulate international competition standards.
Saudi Arabia hosted the third edition of INSO for the first time in the Middle East. The event brought together 120 students and scientific specialists from 19 countries.
The International Nuclear Science Olympiad was approved by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in 2024. It aims to promote the peaceful and safe use of nuclear technologies, encourage young people to pursue studies in nuclear science and support innovation in nuclear applications.
The competition featured two five-hour tests, one practical and one theoretical, designed to assess participants’ scientific reasoning and their ability to apply knowledge from different disciplines to real-world problems.
