Kurdish to be optional subject in Syrian schools

Educational institutions are preparing to implement a new curriculum for teaching the Kurdish language in schools, starting in the 2026-2027 academic year, as an elective subject with two periods per week.

This measure comes in implementation of Decree No. 13, which designated Kurdish as an official national language, in a step aimed at strengthening the cultural and linguistic rights of the various components of Syrian society.

According to available information, the relevant authorities are working on preparing and training teaching staff, developing curricula and textbooks, and identifying the schools and areas where the subject will be implemented during the first phase.
