Tripoli (SANA) Foreign and Expatriates Minister, Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani, reopened Sunday the Syrian Embassy in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, after a closure lasting more than 14 years.
The reopening ceremony was attended by Acting Libyan Foreign Minister, El-Taher El-Baour, other government officials, as well as a number of heads and members of diplomatic missions accredited to Tripoli.
The move comes as part of a series of steps taken by the Syrian state to reorganize and reactivate its diplomatic missions abroad and safeguard the interests of Syrians living overseas.
The Syrian community in Libya is estimated at around 200,000 people, spread across various parts of the country, particularly Tripoli and Benghazi.
The Embassy reopening marks a step toward strengthening Syrian-Libyan relations and deepening the fraternal ties and shared interests between the two countries. It also forms part of a broader effort to restore Syria’s international presence and strengthen the role of its diplomatic missions in serving Syrian citizens and advancing the country’s foreign relations.
Syria and Libya signed today an agreement to strengthen bilateral cooperation and update the framework governing the two countries’ Higher Joint Committee.
The agreement was signed by Foreign Minister al-Shaibani and Libya’s Acting Foreign Minister El-Taher El-Baour.
Speaking to reporters after the signing cermony, al-Shaibani said reopening of the Syrian Embassy in Tripoli reflects the importance and status of Syrian-Libyan relations and paves the way for regularizing the situation of Syrians living in Libya.
Al-Baour, for his part, said the step represents a positive step toward returning bilateral relations to their normal course and further developing them.
