Syrian Mining Company, French firm sign MoU on Homs phosphate plant

Damascus, Aug. 31 (SANA) The Syrian Mining Company signed a memorandum of understanding with French company LODI CONSULTING to cooperate on operating and investing in a phosphate washing plant in Homs with an annual production capacity of 1.2 million tons, as part of efforts to boost investment in the phosphate sector and develop national mining projects.

The Ministry of Energy said Monday on its Telegram channel that the memorandum covers technical, economic and investment studies related to operating, rehabilitating and developing the plant and enhancing its production capabilities.

It also seeks to draw on modern expertise and technologies in phosphate washing and processing to achieve higher technical specifications and strengthen the product’s competitiveness in markets.

The Syrian Mining Company said the memorandum represents an initial step toward establishing an investment partnership with the French side and could pave the way for broader cooperation in mining projects, in line with its strategy to develop and invest in mineral resources using modern economic and technical approaches.

Annual production capacity of 1.2 million tons

The company said the phosphate washing plant is a key project in the phosphate industry because of its role in improving the quality of raw phosphate, increasing its economic value and strengthening local added value.

It said it would continue developing partnerships with specialized companies and drawing on international expertise to rehabilitate mining projects and improve their production and investment efficiency, supporting the national economy and strengthening Syria’s mining sector.

The phosphate plant at al-Sharqiyah Mines reopened on Nov. 25 after rehabilitation work was completed, returning to production for the first time in 10 years with an annual production capacity of 1.2 million tons.
