Damascus, Sept. 6 (SANA) More than 5.2 million students returned to classrooms across Syria on Sunday as the 2026-2027 academic year officially began, according to the Ministry of Education.
Public and private schools, along with other educational institutions, opened their doors in line with the academic calendar set by the ministry after completing preparations to receive students and provide an appropriate learning environment.
The ministry said the new school year begins amid continued efforts to improve the education system, ensure uninterrupted access to learning and accommodate as many students as possible across the country.
This year, schools in all Syrian provinces will follow a unified national curriculum, a move the ministry says is aimed at standardizing educational standards and ensuring equal access to the same academic content for students across the country.
The Damascus curriculum used during the 2025-2026 academic year will remain in place nationwide for 2026-2027 while work continues on a new curriculum. The ministry has completed national standards for the new curriculum and is moving to the next phase of drafting textbooks and educational materials.
The ministry provided about 24 million textbooks for the 2025-2026 school year, in addition to reusing around 7 million books. It has since drawn up an early plan to meet textbook needs for 2026-2027, including automating distribution and tracking delivery progress.
Printing, preparation and distribution are continuing to meet demand from schools, particularly as the number of students returning to Syria increases. The ministry is also working to address logistical obstacles that could delay textbook deliveries.
The start of the academic year brings millions of students back to classrooms as Syria works to expand access to education and establish a unified educational framework across the country.
