Syria nears reopening Qamishli airport to boost eastern region air links

Qamishli, Sept. 8 (SANA) Qamishli International Airport is nearing a return to service as rehabilitation work enters its final stages, part of a broader plan to reconnect Syrian provinces to the country’s air transport network.

A delegation from Syria’s General Authority of Civil Aviation inspected the airport on Monday to assess progress and identify the final requirements needed to restore full operational readiness.

The delegation, headed by Abdullah Darwish, director of the authority’s Support and Supply Directorate, included officials responsible for aviation safety, security and air navigation.

Final preparations underway

During the visit, officials inspected airport facilities and work sites and reviewed the remaining technical and operational requirements ahead of the planned reopening.

Qamishli International Airport Director Sandy Estefo briefed the delegation on the rehabilitation work and preparations underway to return the airport to service.

The planned reopening of Qamishli airport follows the return of Deir Ezzor International Airport to service on Aug. 5 after years of suspension. Deir Ezzor resumed operations with Syrian Airlines flights from Damascus and Kuwait as part of Syria’s broader plan to rehabilitate airports and restore domestic and international air links, particularly in the eastern region

Omar Hosari, head of Syria’s General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport, said earlier that rehabilitation and preparation work had reached its final stages.

He said reopening the airport would mark another step in plans to reconnect all Syrian provinces to the national air transport network while expanding domestic and regional air links, particularly for residents of Hasakah province and Syria’s eastern region.

The authority began rehabilitating Qamishli International Airport on Feb. 25 as part of efforts to restore its technical readiness and return it to full operational capacity.

The planned reopening follows the return of Deir Ezzor International Airport to service on Aug. 5 after years out of service. Deir Ezzor resumed operations with Syrian Airlines flights from Damascus and Kuwait as part of Syria’s broader plan to rehabilitate airports and restore domestic and international air links, particularly in the eastern region.
