Backmail, and sabotage: Who is targeting Syrian oil and gas sector?

Private sources revealed to Zaman Al-Wasl that workers at oil and gas fields in Al-Hasakah Governorate have received threatening messages. These messages demanded that the workers convey the senders' demands to field officials, while threatening to target energy pipelines and facilities if the demands were not met.

According to a message seen by *Zaman Al-Wasl*, the senders claimed responsibility for a previous attack on a gas pipeline. They threatened to repeat acts of sabotage once the line was repaired and returned to service, noting their awareness of the significant damage—affecting production levels, power generation plants, and repair costs—that disrupting gas pipelines could cause.

These threats emerge as the oil and gas fields in Al-Hasakah enter a new phase, following the Syrian Petroleum Company's official takeover of the Rumeilan, Al-Suwaydiyah, and other fields. This transition coincides with plans to boost production and attract companies and investments back to the sector now that control over these assets has been consolidated.
These developments raise concerns that energy facilities and their personnel could become targets for extortion and sabotage aimed at hindering the sector's recovery.

Concurrently, the Syrian Petroleum Company is facing a wave of accusations regarding files and contracts that remain under investigation and audit, with accountability yet to be determined.

Protecting the oil and gas sector today goes beyond safeguarding a single company or a group of fields; it involves protecting a vital resource for the national economy, essential supplies for electricity and industry, and the path toward restoring production and attracting investment. The source adds that targeting facilities or personnel—or engaging in defamation not based on final investigation results—would have direct repercussions for the Syrian economy and its prospects for recovery.
