Energy Ministry approves compensation for those affected by off-specification gasoline

The Syrian Ministry of Energy announced the findings of an investigation into a batch of gasoline that failed to meet specifications and caused damage to citizens' vehicles. The Ministry confirmed that legal action would be taken against those responsible for the issue and tasked the Syrian Petroleum Company with compensating the affected individuals.

In a statement, the Ministry explained that the specialized technical committee—commissioned by the Minister of Energy to investigate the matter—had concluded its work and submitted a final report. The report revealed the presence of a gasoline shipment that did not comply with approved standard and technical specifications; this shipment had previously been offloaded into storage facilities belonging to the Syrian Petroleum Company.

The statement noted that the company had decided to return the shipment to its source after confirming its non-compliance with specifications and its unsuitability for consumption in the local market.

However, during the return process via the pipeline network, an operational error occurred, causing the non-compliant gasoline to mix with gasoline that met specifications. A portion of this mixture reached the local market, resulting in damage to citizens' vehicles.

The Ministry affirmed that the investigation's findings would lead to legal action against all parties responsible for the error and negligence, commensurate with their respective roles. Additionally, measures will be taken to address shortcomings in the operational and oversight systems to prevent such incidents from recurring.

The Ministry also directed the Syrian Petroleum Company to establish a mechanism for compensating affected citizens and to announce the details of this process, with compensation to be implemented in successive stages.
